Frequently Asked Questions
What radios are compatible with Rig Executive?
Rig Executive is specifically designed as a control program for the Yaesu FTDX10. While it may work with other Yaesu radios, this has not been tested.
What are the main features?
Major features include:
- Monitoring of receive and transmit frequencies with out-of-band transmit warnings
- Easy-to-use presets including band switching and radio configuration
- Simple, real-time adjustment of noise reduction and noise blanking via mouse movement
- Elimination of most button pushing on the FTDX10
What additional hardware is required?
No additional hardware is required. If multiple digital modes are to be steered through Rig Executive, then a virtual null-modem program such as com0com (open source) or a commercial package is required for interconnection.
What was the design philosophy behind the user interface?
The user interface was designed with several goals in mind:
- Quick switching between digital modes
- Easier navigation compared to FTDX10’s physical buttons and menus
- Minimal screen clutter and reduced mouse clicks
How is initial configuration handled?
Underlying settings (ports, auxiliary apps, etc.) are configured in a separate window, accessible from the Options dropdown menu.
How do you recover from a system crash?
Although Rig Executive is robust, things happen. Stray RF in your shack can scramble your PC’s brain. A hard drive could fail. It is advised to back up the database (rigexecutive.db) whenever a major change is made.
What is the licensing model?
Rig Executive is currently being distributed as beta software that includes a license good until 1-1-27. No decision has been made about future plans.
How are transmission restrictions handled?
A visual warning is given if the type of transmission (SSB, PSK, etc.) is not permitted on a given frequency.
How are digital modes supported?
Digital modes are fully supported (with a few exceptions noted in ‘Limitations’). Features include:
- Easy configuration of FTDX10 settings on a per-app basis
- All settings adjustable on the fly
- Settings can be saved or discarded as desired
What are the system requirements?
Currently, the program only runs under Windows 10 and 11. It may function on older releases but that has not been tested. A Linux version is planned for future release.
